Sutja Gutiérrez - Lucy (Love Scene)

It's been a while since I've written about Sutja Gutiérrez (of The Fruhstucks). So what has he been up to? Well, have a listen. This track glows with neon-colored constellations and sizzles with an 80's love story of when Venus met Mars. I'm actually having a hard time writing about this song while I listen to it 'cause my mind keeps drifting off into that colorful dream of cosmic collision. So, I guess enough is enough; grab your stonewashed comforter, your lucky lover and this smoking hot tune and head for the field under that electrifying spectrum of hydrogen and helium.

This track is off of Sutja's new album called Sutja Gutiérrez Original Soundtrack, now out on Decaucho.

Sutja surprised the world with this brilliant video as a preview for this track almost two weeks ago. And I should say this, after hanging out with him in Paris and Santa Cruz a few months ago, I quickly came to realize that there is so much more talent inside him that we haven't even seen yet. For now, the greater part of it remains safely locked away in that beautiful coastal town called Castellón...but get ready for his big 'bail out'; you have been warned.

Lantern - Crude Vessels of Sound (video)

You might want to keep a glass of water close by 'cause this wonderfully barren, bluesy track and video are soon to make you thirsty with their desert heat. These lingering fuzzy notes will trap you like the hot sun until they impulsively fade away into something more thirst-quenching—I was kind of hoping for a lemonade stand, personally, but I think you'll enjoy what Lantern, Alex Zhang Hungtai (aka Dirty Beaches) and Jacqueline Lachance have in store/'in desert' for you.

I love the beating heart that drums in the background: it serves as a reminder that time and reflection are both constants throughout this video.

Gunk TV Records + Raw Thrills - Whole Lotta Lovin' (Daytripper Yeah) + More

I got me a whole lotta late night lovin' for this twangy, psychedelic-rockabilly, pop gem that Zak posted on his new Gunk TV Records site/store. Yes, you read that right, Zak Mering has just started his own label and this new site "will provide you with everything you need" that's raw and thrilling (and so much more!). This will now be the home for all of his projects, as well as the place to check out and purchase the work of his friends, and even fam. So far, his label includes the following: Raw ThrillsVital CaressThe Sweethearts, Greatest Hits, Outer Limits Recordings, James FerraroWeyes Blood, Sky Juice, Warp and Grip Spot (and I'm sure this list will be outdated very very soon). Actually, from the time I posted this, I went to sleep and woke up to a new exclusive (hence the edit).

This just recorded track is his first exclusive on the label as Raw Thrills. Get after this you daytripper/nighttripper you, yeah.

Here's another exclusive from Gunk TV: this is the '3rd single from the 2nd installment of Wingdings'—a slow moving video for Maui Wowee Mow Wow that ends with a splash!

Friday Mix

Happy Friday, everyone! Here's a mix of a few random songs I've been listening to a bunch this week (both new and relatively new)—consisting of various genres (the last one being the most different; it falls into the category of 'world' or 'lounge' music).

The KVB - It's Too Late (video) + more

Here are a few darkwave, neo-psychedelic tracks from Britain's Klaus Von Barrel. These were released recently over at Beco DSL. I would definitely head over there and grab 'em if I were you; it's def not too late.

Let's be honest here, how many times could you listen to the A-side track, It's Too late before you get sick of it? I've lost count and I'm not even close...

Dirty Beaches - Badlands LP + Lord Knows Best (video)

I like my beaches dirty as long as Alex Zhang Hungtai is the one doing all the thrashing and trashing. Alex has had a few releases so far but his debut full-length called Badlands is expected out March 29 on Zoo Music. You can pre-order it in the US at Insound, or in the UK or EU at Rough Trade.

I have to say, the Badlands are pretty badass; and from what I can tell so far, so is this album. This full-length (and Dirty Beaches, in general) has a Cass McCombs meets Elvis thing going on, mixed with the perfect amount of psychedelic pop—a combination any caged animal or romantic soul simply cannot resist.

Here are three songs off of this 8-track LP.

[MP3] Dirty Beaches - Lord Knows Best
[MP3] Dirty Beaches - True Blue
[MP3] Dirty Beaches - Sweet 17

True Blue and Sweet 17 were actually released back in August and can be purchased at Amazon or elsewhere. Also, Amazon has made this album available for an early listen, so I'd head over there and check out the rest of the LP, too; but first, watch this new video by Magic Chill for Lord Knows Best.

Lord only knows how good this is.

Dirty Beaches - Lord Only Knows from MAGIC CHILL on Vimeo.

A quote from Alex (via Rough Trade):
"The concept behind Badlands, is about a man who is possessed by the road. My mother used to say to me, "you walk at night often enough, sooner or later you'll run into a ghost."

Honeydrum - Honeydrum EP + The Cuban (video)

This Jersey band is currently working on another release called Saturdays (which they're expecting to finish up sometime next week). Their current self-titled EP can be downloaded for free via Bandcamp or you can help support these guys by grabbing one of their freshly finished cassettes for 5 bucks (7 outside of the US). They only have 24 copies so when they're gone, they're gone. Order info and more on Tumblr.

For now, enjoy their first three tracks, as well as their latest video for The Cuban.

An American Chinese - Panic Pilgrim, Quick Grab Your Suitcase (video)

Here's a sweet video for Panic Pilgrim, Quick Grab Your Suitcase. This track actually came out a while ago ('07, I think) but I recently stumbled upon this video, and also discovered that they released an album (with this track) back in September called Utopian Tree, which you can grab over at Bandcamp.

[MP3] An American Chinese - Panic Pilgrim, Quick Grab Your Suitcase

When I first saw this, I immediately thought of that video for Plants and Animals 'Feedback in the Field' that came out a couple of years ago. They're definitely different but they both have a similar style; so if you haven't seen that yet, you should check it out, too.

I love this.

Holy Spirits - White Walls (video)

Nathaniel Whitcomb's videos are always so thoughtful and special; I always feel like I am opening a gift when I hit play.

Nathan captures viewers as he draws them into his 2-dimensional world and surprises them with an artistic transformation—one that guides them to place of motion, wonder and tranquility. The music he chooses to sync up with his motion collages also play a major role in this creative atmosphere. The glowing instrumentals and soft chamber pop vocals of Holy Spirits set the perfect temperature and peaceful backdrop for Nathaniel's inspiration—always brilliant (either together or alone).

According to him, this motion collage was hand cut, scanned and digitally assembled from a pile of 40-year-old National Geographic magazines. You can find more on his vimeo page or over at thinkorsmile.com

Holy Spirits' debut EP The Afternoon's Blood was released back in April. You can download it for free via their Bandcamp page (and I highly recommend that you do).

When I listen to their music, I think of the Fleet Foxes or Patrick Watson—just beautiful and eerie.

Raw Thrills - Hurdy Gurdy Man (Donovan cover)

My face so motionless; my mind so dizzy. It sees miles beyond my blank stare. A tilted frame on the wall bothers me...but I don't fix it. I am spinning but I remain still.

It was then that the wind came through the window, and got me to blink.

This is a new cover of Donovan's 1968 track Hurdy Gurdy Man from Raw Thrills/Zak Mering off of the album Psychedelic Pop Revolution, which he has/is/will be recording at Melrose Place Studios in Brooklyn.

I don't know much other than that 'cause he just sent me this track but I think you should loop it; I have all day.

Relentless Noisemaker's 2010 Top 150 Tracks

Well guys, this has been a crazy year! I never thought that the blog I created for just my friends (with the tag line "I'm not a writer; I just like music") would ever turn into this but I am so excited that it has. This has introduced me to so many wonderful artists (of all kinds), readers and fellow bloggers and I am truly grateful for that, as well as the opportunity to get to 'know' so many of you over the last few months. Thank you all for your love and support.

So, the list...well, I couldn't just stop at 10, 25, 50 or even 100 so I decided 150 was a good number; there was just so much awesome music this year and I thought it needed to be celebrated and shared and also made accessible to those who have never heard these songs before (a list without MP3s would have saved me a lot of time but who, honestly, is going to take the time to look up all of these songs?...and they definitely need to be remembered and listened to again). Also, please let me emphasize that there is such a fine line between the 1st and the 150th song (and any song that has appeared on this blog, in general) but as my blogger 'duty' I had to make a list and order them but know that they are all tightly snuggled inside my heart as a single unit.

So, Happy New Year, everyone! This will either cure your hangover or give you more of a headache because you don't agree with it but, either way, you'll have a long playlist to chill out to or to start practicing those New Year's dance moves to. I hope you find some enjoyment in this list and possibly walk away with some new tunes.

Also, please remember to support the artists (and labels!) by purchasing their music and going to see them live! Enjoy!

BONUS: Two tracks from the future! They should be on this list because I fell in love with them in 2010. Actually, the first artist, Raw Thrills aka Zak Mering is part of the duo (with Sam Meringue) sitting at the number one spot. He has a couple others in this list, too. If you haven't noticed yet, Zak Mering is, without a doubt, my favorite artist of the year. So watch out for him and all his projects, and also watch out for Hands and Knees, too! They're both setting a pretty high bar for 2011.

Raw Thrills - How Can I Trust Her | Hear More
Hands and Knees - The Moonlight is Wicked | Hear More

A final note: as much as I'd like to think I heard everything that came out this year, that couldn't be farthest from the truth; there is no way in hell any of us can listen to everything that is produced in one year (not even the big guys) but we all do what we can, right? It's a never ending list of music; and I'm certain that you have tons up your sleeve that I haven't gotten a hold of yet. Just checking out some of the many music blogs that exist this year has made me realize that. So, here's to the New Year and to more discoveries!!

Thanks to all of you!
